Moving house is a stressful affair – whether you are going 50m away, or 500 kilometers away. Even with the use of the expert removalists in Coogee or Parramatta, there are a lot of things you can do to help ease the move, and make it much smoother. Here are 15 of those tips.

1. Fail to plan and you should plan to fail

It’s said on this page a lot, but if you don’t plan then you won’t succeed. Or at least, it will be very unlikely.

2. Stick to your plan as much as possible

Once you’ve put your plan together, do your best to stick to it. If you don’t then there was no point at all! Whether it involves using the most efficient removalists in Randwick or the highest-rated removalists in Hornsby, or your mates, it should be adhered to.

3. Hire a well-renowned removalist

Make sure you do your research on who to hire. Make sure they have insurance, experience, reliability, good testimonials that you can call, and know the route well. It’s worth it.

4. Don’t forget to update your registration, driver’s license, etc

Remember, if you’re moving interstate, or out of your constituency and into another one, you will need to update your info or change your Driver’s License.

5. Make an inventory list

It’s a smart thing to do for any move – especially the long-distance ones. Make a list of all your stuff, and how much of each thing you have (like plates and cutlery, etc).

6. Map out your new home ahead of time

If possible, get your idea of where things will go before you do the move itself.

7. Spring clean your stuff before moving

Moving with lots of stuff is usually more time-consuming, expensive, and headache-inducing. We recommend you whittle your stuff down pre-moving.

8. Pack boxes with the long journey in mind

This is one of the all-time best tips when moving long distances, but isn’t said enough. Don’t be scared to double pack, double layer. Remember, your stuff will be in transit for a lot longer than usual – that’s more potential bumps in the road.

9. Organise your boxes by room

Same with any other move, make sure you don’t just chuck random things in together for the sake of saving space.

10. Make sure to label boxes with your name and new address

Sometimes the removalists will pack your things on the truck with another family’s stuff for the long haul – make sure to clearly label your stuff.

11. Move during the off-season (particularly Winter)

Not only for price, but also as it means you will be more likely to get your chosen dates, and also not feel too rushed!

12. Double and triple check your things and compare them to your inventory

Make sure to do this before your movers leave – remember, once they leave, they are going back a long way!

13. Make sure you have access on time

If you need to pick up keys from the real estate office, make sure you’ve planned for this. Nothing worse than moving long distances, only to find removalists wanting to unload your stuff on the front lawn because you can’t give them access in a timely manner.

14. Consider having your car shipped

It’s ok if you like long drives, or if you’re moving long distances but not too long, but if you’re moving interstate, over water, or otherwise a very long way – consider getting your car shipped there.

15. Don’t stress

Moving long distances should be the easiest possible move. Just make sure you’re prepared, and then enjoy your move as much as possible. Long distance means a fresh start, for whatever reason, so enjoy it.

So there you have it – make sure to enjoy your long-distance move and look to the future!

About The Author

Bill Chen

Before 2008, Bill was working with a local removalist company in Sydney and was witness for a number of deformities and wrongs in the working of the company. Observing the atmosphere, a thought came to Bill’s mind that he could do much better if he were the owner of the company, by offering a fully transparent service to the clients with a friendly and trustworthy staff and no hidden fee structure; and thus, in 2008, AAA Bill Removalists Sydney was formed with just one truck and only Bill as staff. Even if Bill Chen began the company as just one man, the company grew fast. The operation expanded beyond the Sydney suburbs and to the surrounding cities: Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Canberra, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, and other.
