Moving is a big event for anyone, especially for young families, even if you’re just moving across town. You have to pack everything up, live in temporary chaos, get everything and everyone from A to B with the help of the best Eastern Suburbs or Inner West removalists. You have to figure out the kinks and quirks of your new house, and your new routines.

For children of all ages, this can be even harder. They can lose friends, they can struggle with sleep due to new sounds and creaks,  they wake up in a new place and can feel disorientated. Couple that with you as the parent going through stress and maybe not having as much energy to deal with them as usual. Once you have done your move alongside cheap removals Sydney, think about these 25 tips:

1. Let them choose their room in advance

Getting them onboard and involved is important.

2. Move on a day when they can be at school

It’s much easier to send them to school from the old place, and then have them come home to the new place whilst the bulk of the move has been done.

3. Give them tasks

Keeping them occupied builds their sense of responsibility and involvement.

 4. Try to take 30-40 minutes on moving day to walk around the new area

A great way to help is to go for a stroll around the block or few blocks in order to help your young ones start to get a feel for the new place.

5. Talk to them early about it, explain the benefits of it

Kids generally will adapt well to positive changes – sell the benefits to them and don’t leave it to the last minute to tell them.

And generally:

6. Let the kids help you pack

If they’re old enough, let your children help you pack some of their personal belongings. Even at a young age, kids can sort their toys and help you wrap objects in tissue paper or bubble wrap.

7. Have a farewell party

Give your kids an opportunity to say goodbye to the friends they might lose, or even in general, the home they are leaving.

8. Make a memory board

Help your kids make a memory board by building a collage of their favorite pictures with their favorite people – this can be kept or even hung up in the new place.

9. Take their feelings seriously

Even toddlers can verbalize at least some of what they’re feeling, and older children will probably have lots of questions and concerns.

10.  Time your move if possible

Sometimes, circumstances dictate when you have to move. But, if you have a choice, try to time your move so that it occurs at a relatively calm period in your child’s life.

11.  Pull out the diapers if needed

If you’ll be traveling by car or plane with a recently potty-trained toddler or pre-schooler, think about putting them in a pull-up for the duration of your trip. It will give you peace of mind, just in case you can’t find a bathroom along the way.

12. Pack a special bag of favorite toys – or for 2021, your kids’ iPad

Invest in a small backpack or overnight bag that will stay with your child through the entire move.

13. Pack one box of toys last.

Your children are going to need things to do right up until the time you move out of your home. Don’t make the mistake of packing all the toys up first because you’ll be left with bored children who just might drive you crazy.

14.  Label boxes of kids’ stuff very clearly

Make sure removal boxes don’t just have “toys” labelled – it should be something like “toy cars” and then “toy dolls” or something similar.

15. Provide alternate entertainment.

If babysitters are available, use them!

16.  Make it an adventure

I’m pretty sure that all the extra trips to fast-food restaurants and the slightly later bed times are my kids’ favorite part of moving.

17. Keep extra clothes handy

Kids make messes. Often.

18. Use a cooler

At some point before you move, you will have to unplug your refrigerator and empty your pantry.

19.  Maintain familiar routines.

Try to keep as many constants in place during a time of upheaval.

20. Reassure kids that you are a constant in their life.

When young kids lose the security of a home they’ve always known, it can cause feelings of anxiety over losing their other sources of security.

21. Make a big deal about all the exciting new things you can do.

A new home means new friends and new opportunities.

22. Don’t be in a hurry to unpack.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but trust me – sometimes this can cause more mess and clutter for a while.

23. Make it feel like home quickly

Familiar things will help to make a new house feel like home for both you and your children.

Overall your move with kids doesn’t have to be anything other than happy, effective and smooth, especially with the above blueprints! If you speak to any good removalist, they can help you with ideas as they move houses for people and families every day! If you’re wondering how much to tip, there’s plenty on that topic too but remember, removalists like Bill’s will help you as much as possible with every aspect of the move!

About The Author

Bill Chen

Before 2008, Bill was working with a local removalist company in Sydney and was witness for a number of deformities and wrongs in the working of the company. Observing the atmosphere, a thought came to Bill’s mind that he could do much better if he were the owner of the company, by offering a fully transparent service to the clients with a friendly and trustworthy staff and no hidden fee structure; and thus, in 2008, AAA Bill Removalists Sydney was formed with just one truck and only Bill as staff. Even if Bill Chen began the company as just one man, the company grew fast. The operation expanded beyond the Sydney suburbs and to the surrounding cities: Wollongong, Wagga Wagga, Albury, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Canberra, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, and other.
